You’ve been working hard all year, and its finally time to take a much-needed break. But before you head out on your well-deserved summer vacation, make sure you’re not forgetting something important: your oral health. Here are a few important tips to help you keep your smile on schedule, even if you’re off the clock!
Know Before You Go
The last thing you need to worry about when you’re on vacation is a dental emergency. That’s why it’s important to schedule your semi-annual exam before you head out. This way, your dentist can treat any issues (or give you a clean bill of health) ahead of your time off, so you’ll be healthy, happy, and ready to relax.
Pack it Up
When it’s time to pack that suitcase, don’t forget to include your oral hygiene gear. After all, just because you’re taking time off doesn’t mean your mouth can. Here are a few items to add to your checklist:
- Toothbrush
- Dental floss
- Toothpaste
- Travel-sized mouthwash
- Retainer, mouthguard, bite guard, sleep appliance (if applicable)
- Cleanser for oral appliance (if applicable)
- Storage case for oral appliance (if applicable)
Stick With It
While vacation is the perfect opportunity to indulge in a variety of delicious treats, remember that moderation is key. Go ahead and have that saltwater taffy on the boardwalk or take a bite out of that candy apple at the fair but be sure to brush your teeth and floss after, and try to incorporate healthy food in your diet to offset the sweets. Staying on track with your oral hygiene and healthy diet will make it easier to get back to your normal routine when you return home, and you’ll feel a lot better, too.
Take a Number
If you’re travelling out of town, be sure to take along the contact information for your dentist in case of emergencies. If you will be traveling out of the country, save the number of the local consulate or the US Embassy ahead of time. They can help guide you in the direction of a reputable dentist should you need one.
Water, Water
If you’re in doubt about the safety of the tap water available in the area you’re staying, stick with bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth. Furthermore, be sure to shower and swim with your mouth closed so you’re less likely to accidentally swallow water that could be contaminated.
Remember, vacation is your time to relax and have a good time. Don’t let stress over your oral health get in the way of your fun! With a little preparation, you’ll have plenty to smile about!
