You likely already know that brushing your teeth is essential to preventing oral issues, but if you don’t also floss, you’re doing your smile a disservice. Brushing alone removes less than half of the plaque buildup that can cause problemsDr.  like cavities and gum disease.

Flossing, on the other hand, can remove up to 80% of residue buildup and ensure that no bacteria penetrate beneath your gums. However, there are several types of products to choose from when it comes to scouring between your teeth. Some patients want to know what gets a better clean: a Waterpik or standard floss. Continue reading to learn more about it so you can make an informed decision!

What is a Waterpik?

Waterpiks are oral irrigation devices that use a pressurized stream of pulsating H2O to clear food particles, germs, and plaque away from teeth and gumline. Their large base makes them easier to grasp and manipulate than a thin piece of silky string. As a result, they’re popular among people with mobility challenges, arthritis, orthodontics, dental work, or who have a hard time moving standard floss around their mouths.

Are Waterpiks More Effective?

If you have overly sensitive gums or mobility issues and are considering a Waterpik, it’s natural to wonder whether it cleans your teeth as well as traditional floss. Fortunately, studies show that these products actually eradicate 29% more plaque, making them both a practical and highly effective alternative solution.

How Do I Use a Waterpik?

Thankfully, it’s usually relatively easy to learn how to use a Waterpik. Depending on the kind you get, it may come with multiple tips. Select one, attach it to the irrigator, and fill the device’s reservoir with water. Then, set it to the lowest pressure setting (if it has options) and place the tip in your mouth.

Next, turn it on and direct the tip to your gumline. Slowly move it across your teeth and gums to gently remove unwanted bits of food, bacteria, and residue. You should clean it after each use, and don’t share your flosser with others to avoid sharing germs.

Although Waterpiks continue to gain popularity as an alternative way to keep your grin happy and healthy, it’s still possible to preserve your oral health with the traditional method, too. Pick whichever method is easiest for you to maintain over time, so you can keep your grin in great shape in the long run!
