Happy National Dental Hygiene Month! Each October, we celebrate our hard-working dental hygienists, and in their honor help you achieve optimal oral hygiene, even when you’re not here in the chair! If you’d like to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong, follow these useful tips for your best smile ever!

Brush & Floss

Brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day is the easiest way to protect your teeth and gums from a long list of oral health problems, from as minor as stains to as major as cavities, tooth infections, and even gum disease. While your dental hygienist excels at clearing away stubborn tartar, when you properly care for your teeth at home, there’s a lot less buildup to remove during your cleaning!

Watch What You Eat

When it comes to your oral hygiene, what you eat matters. Dark foods can leave behind stains on the teeth of even the most diligent brusher, and consuming highly acidic foods and beverages can cause enamel erosion that leaves them more vulnerable to sensitivity and decay.

Furthermore, eating lots of carbohydrates and sugar can increase your risk of cavities, so be sure to eat a balanced diet to help counteract this.

Drink Water

Water (especially fluoridated water) is the best beverage for your body.  Not only is it good for your blood and organs, but it also keeps you hydrated, helps rinse away food particles, and keeps your mouth from drying out, which can cause bacteria to proliferate.

Not only that, but because it doesn’t have any dyes, sugars, or acids, it won’t stain your teeth, increase your risk of cavities, or even cause you to gain any weight!

Visit the Dentist

Be sure to visit the dentist at least twice a year for your semi-annual cleanings and exams. These will not only make it easier for your hygienist to keep your teeth looking their whitest, but it will also give you a heads-up to any potential oral health or hygiene issues lurking behind that beautiful smile.

Remember, your hygienist wants to help give you your most gorgeous grin. Help show your appreciation and make their job a little easier by taking excellent care of your teeth and gums between appointments, so their work can shine through when it’s time for your cleaning and exam!
