Traditional full dentures have been used for generations to treat complete tooth loss in one or both arches. Advancements in materials and technologies provide more realistic results than ever before. Your dentist can create a custom-fit denture that looks and feels natural. However, the process won’t happen overnight. Here’s how long you can expect it to take to get your dentures.
Average Denture Timeline
No two situations are identical. Many factors can affect your treatment timeline. Although every case differs, here are the steps you can expect:
Extractions and Healing
It’s not unusual to require tooth extractions before getting your dentures. After having your teeth removed, it can take 6-8 weeks for your mouth to heal before you can begin the denture process.
Additional Preparatory Procedures
Many people need additional procedures before getting dentures, like gum disease therapy. Your mouth must be healthy before replacing your lost teeth.
Dental Impressions
Your dentist will make an impression of your mouth, which will be used to create a mockup of your denture. Your impression will be sent to the dental lab for creation.
Wax Mockups and Adjustments
After the lab sends the wax model back to your dentist, you’ll try on your new smile. It’s common to need several adjustments to ensure your denture fits comfortably and snugly.
Final Denture Fitting
Once all adjustments are complete, the dental lab will create your final denture from high-quality materials. After your dentist receives it, you’ll return to their office for your new set of teeth. It’s not unusual to need a couple of adjustments in a few weeks.
Regular Relining
Your new denture can last for 5 to 7 years with the right care. You can get the most from your investment by having your denture relined regularly. This ensures it continues to function its best and provides a comfortable fit.
Immediate Dentures
If you choose immediate dentures, you’ll receive them on the same day as your tooth extractions. They will act as Band-Aids for your healing gums. You will need adjustments after your mouth has healed.
Implant Dentures
Implant dentures take several months to receive. Implant posts are surgically placed into your jawbone to serve as new tooth roots. Your bone must fuse to them before you can be fitted with your new denture. You’ll never have to worry about slipping or irritation. Your new smile can last for 30 years or longer with the right care, like brushing and flossing.
Your dentist will explain exactly what you can expect, depending on the type of tooth replacement you choose. Maintaining your dental appointments will ensure there aren’t any delays in your journey to a complete smile.
