Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

There are a few situations in which we may recommend a tooth extraction, including:

  • A tooth is severely decayed and can’t be repaired with a dental filling or crown.
  • A tooth previously treated with root canal therapy has become reinfected.
  • A tooth is severely damaged and cannot be repaired.
  • There isn’t enough room in your mouth to undergo orthodontic treatment.
  • Gum disease has eroded the supportive structures of a tooth, causing it to become loose.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

If we determine that a tooth extraction is necessary, you don’t have to stress – our skilled, experienced, and compassionate dentist, Dr. Hansen, will go above and beyond to make the entire process seamless. That starts with numbing your mouth so you don’t feel any discomfort. Once you’re ready, he will begin the process of removing your tooth via a simple or surgical extraction. Then, he will tend to the extraction site and provide you with a list of aftercare instructions to help you heal comfortably at home.

During the recovery period, there are a few things you should do (as well as several things you should avoid). Here are a few examples:

  • Change the gauze pads as instructed
  • Eat only extremely soft foods, like applesauce
  • Brush and floss carefully around the extraction site
  • Don’t smoke, drink alcohol, use a straw, or spit
  • Keep your head elevated while you sleep
  • Use a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time
  • Take prescribed or OTC pain medication as directed

If you have any questions in the days following your procedure, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We also recommend getting in touch with us if you develop a fever or start to experience any other warning signs of an infection. That way, we can schedule an emergency appointment, if necessary.
